Statement of Significance

Woodside, constructed c. 1855-58 by William Lavender, the Kyneton Police Magistrate and a locally prominent citizen, is of regional architectural and historical significance. The house, of relatively early date, was among the largest in the district at the time of construction and is a fine example of substantial bluestone construction with an unusual and decorative bond pattern in the stonework. The L-shaped plan form, with the rear service wing built to one side, is unusual and may reflect a desire to capture the views of the surrounding country which exist on all sides. The tall 15-paned sash windows to the principal rooms in the front wing, extending down almost to floor level, are relatively uncommon and demonstrate the survival of Regency modes in Victoria in the 1850s. Although the exterior of the house has been altered by construction of verandahs apparently in the early twentieth century and a brick extension to the rear wing in the 1940s, the exterior otherwise remains substantially intact.
