Statement of Significance

Railway Viaduct, Malmsbury, is an enormous bluestone structure erected in 1859 to carry the Melbourne-Sandhurst (Bendigo) Railway over the Coliban River. The total length of the structure is 500 feet and the bridge itself is composed of five arched spans each of 60 feet. The bridge is faced with rusticated masonry and the voussoirs and impost mouldings, string course and the huge cutwaters are features.
The viaduct is one of the largest nineteenth century engineering structures erected in Victoria. The bridge exemplifies the massive scale of the nineteenth century railway undertakings, particularly on this line and is representative of bridge building techniques now lost. The viaduct is a major element in the surrounding landscape. Designed according to classically derived engineering structures practice, the bridge is typical in its detailing.
The site is intact and is in good condition.
