Statement of Significance

Rock House,Kyneton, is a large bluestone house on the banks of the Campaspe River, erected circa 1853-54 for pastoralist Edward Argyle.
U shaped in plan, the two-storied structure has a central, hip roofed section with two double storied side wings enclosing a court lined with double storey verandahs and a bluestone wall. Construction is in random coursed masonry, roofs are slate and quoins and window surrounds are features.
Rock House forms part of the notable townscape of Kyneton, an important nineteenth century highway town. Rock House is a particularly substantial and early bluestone house, imortant in the surrounding la ndscape and with historical associations. Colonial Georgian in style, the house is fairly typically planned, but is important for its detailing, its stone masonry and its size. The extensive double storied verandahs are of interest.
Rock House, Kyneton, has been quite extensively altered during this century.
