This portable timber school was delivered from Melbourne to its present site by William McCulloch & Co., general carriers, in March 1877 on the instructions of H R Bastow, a Public Works Department architect. Originally known as the Railway Steam Saw Mills School No 1290 in 1883 and in 1892 it was re-named Kerrie State School No 1290.
This weatherboard building, which is one of the earliest portable schools still in use, had various alterations to partitions, windows and porches 1882, 1885 and 1887 and was also used as a Post Office, a Church and a Sunday shcool.
