Statement of Significance

An early example of a German settler's cottage, dating perhaps from the later 1850s, and of distinctive form and construction. The attic rooms are reached by a steep stair rising from within a cupboard in the skillion kitchen. The floor joists and exterior wall studs rest directly on a rubble plinth, with no horizontal timber plate, and the whole of the framing is packed with pug. The cottage is one of the few relics of what was probably the earliest mode of German settlement in Victoria.
