AHC Statement of Significance
The log lock-up, High Street, was erected c. 1855 and was originally located within the police station precinct. It is constructed of rough hewn logs, each approximately 30cm. diameter, stacked 14 high and crossed at the corners. The roof was originally clad in timber shingles. The lock-up was used for the temporary accommodation of wrong-dooers and for prisoners awaiting trial. There are several nineteenth century lock-ups in Victoria. Of the surviving examples, those constructed of rough hewn logs are among the most notable, giving modern day Australians an insight into latter day penal accommodation and into primitive construction techniques. The lock-up at Eaglehawk is a fine example of this building type. Its heavy timber door with robust locking device is a notable feature. The building in its picturesque setting beside the Court House is an essential featue of this important historic area. The building is intact and secure and appears to be in a sound structural condition .
