Statement of Significance

Innisfail at 186-188 High Street, Heathcote, was constructed at an unknown date between 1860-1880 for Henry Trevaskis. The house consists of a two storey brick and stucco section with a single storey timber wing which may have been the original house. Unusually exotic vermiculated quoins and stucco ornamentation adorn the principal facade which is sheltered by a timber and cast iron balcony verandah of unknown date (c. 1894-98).
Innisfail at Heathcote is one of few two storey brick structures of the 19th century in the district. The architectural design is undistinguished and notable only for the unusually florid stucco ornamentation. J J Farley, son of the local hotelkeeper, acquired the house in 1894. Farley was active in municipal affairs and operated a regular car service to Melbourne in the 1920s. Innisfail stands as the most impressive residential building in Heathcote.
Innisfail is in a depressed condition. The interiors are relatively intact. The rear buildings have been impaired by construction of a brick laundry and asbestos sheet garage.
