Statement of Significance

Craigton, a single storey house located off the Viaduct Road at Moorabool, was apparently erected in 1860 as the residence of the chief engineer responsible for supervision of construction of the nearby Moorabool Railway Viaduct. This rectangular plan structure is plainly adorned in a transitional Italianate style characteristic of the work of Victorian Railways architects in the mid nineteenth century.
Craigton has interesting associations with the construction of the Geelong-Ballarat railway and the monumental Moorabool River viaduct of 1860. The residence is a notable transitional Italianate style design constructed of squared basalt with the facade only enhanced by stucco rendering and small composite timber and iron verandah. The house has dramatic views over the Moorabool Valley and the impressive railway viaduct.
Craigton is in reasonable condition and relatively intact.
