The Portland Lifeboat is significant at the state level as one of the first five purpose-built lifeboats to be constructed and used on Victorian Coastal Waters. The lifeboat is also significant for its role in the heroic rescue from the Admella in 1859 and also on other rescues. The lifeboat and the associated Memorial Tablets form a memorial to those involved in the Admella rescue. Current research would indicate that this is one of the oldest surviving vessels in Australia and is of great interest for its construction and the development of marine design in Australia.
