Statement of Significance

The Big Garage, designed by W B Plaisted, and completed in 1923 is of State historical and architectural significance. Architecturally, the big Garage is a striking, eclectic design, featuring a large arched entrance portal, with stripped classical detailing, with a strong Greek influence. It is one of the most elaborate, and certainly the largest, of the small number of early motor garages in Victoria. Historically, the Big Garage is significant as one of the first RACV sponsored garages to be established in Victoria. It is also significant for its association with recreation and tourism in Gippsland, and for being operated by the same family over four generations.
