Statement of Significance

In 1836, the first of the overlanders from NSW came through the area. One, Hawden, was so taken with the area that he took up squatter's rights to the large Tallarook run in 1837 and which he retained until 1856. In 1839, the Jamieson brothers leased part of the run and built Tallarook house in 1839 from stone quarried on the property. The front part of the present homestead still has its original shake roof under the present roof and this may be part of the original homestead. There is some belief that the shepherd's cottage, also built of quarried stone, is the original.

Hawden began the first mail run from Melbourne to Sydney before selling up to Mr Thomas Collier Brooke. Brooke enlarged the homestead to its present size and in 1862 planted many of the magnificent trees which still stand.
