Statement of Significance

The pastoral property "Meningoort" was established in 1842 following division of a larger Western District grazing run earlier leased in 1837 by pioneer settlers Peter McArthur and Nicholas Cole. McArthur built a substantial stone house and outbuildings in 1851 and in 1886 Melbourne architect Charles D'Ebro integrated the original residence into a large Italianate style homestead constructed of ubiquitous basalt with encircling iron verandah.

"Meningoort" near Camperdown was one of the earliest established homesteads in Victoria and still in the possession of the McArthur family. Successive generations of descendants of Peter McArthur have made long and distinguished contributions to public service and the Western District community. The present homestead complex, dramatically sited on the Mt. Meningoort slopes is a notable example of the work of architect D'Ebro and an exemplar of the popular Italianate homestead mode of the 1880's. The original stone homestead is virtually indiscernible.

"Meningoort" has been meticulously maintained in near original 1880's condition externally. The interior has been sensitively enhanced. .
