Statement of Significance

Tarndwarncoort was erected in 1848 by English-born settler Alexander Dennis after acquisition of the lease in 1841. The comparatively substantial and unadorned one and half storey rubble stone house was extended in 1877 with construction of a two storey wing buit of finely detailed bluestone and linking cast iron verandah in a conservative Italianate design by Colac architect Alex Hamilton.
Tarndwarncoort is one of the earliest established properties in western Victoria and has since 1841 been occupied by successive generations of the Dennis family. The 1848 stone house of unusual design, and relfecting early 19th century English rural architectural traditions, is recognisably intact and one of the oldest surviving homesteads in Victoria. The 1877 addition is a refined and notable illustration of the work of architect Hamilton.
Tarndwarncoort is an interesting homestead complex which is virtually intact and well maintained.
