Statement of Significance

The Senior School of Ballarat and Clarendon College is architecturally important at a state level as an outstanding example of the Tudor Revival style in red brick with cement dressings.
Desinged by Percival Richards in 1911 after his sucessful competition entry, the buildings remain almost completely as originally constructed andare unusual amongst major Victorian school complexes to have been designed as a formal group of buildings creating an open "quadrangle". It uses simple forms to create a strong central entry used to provide a coherant whole to a carefully arranged overall plan.
The classification is limited to those buildings designed by P S Richards or completed to his original plan.
The Senior school is a major work of a prominent and prolific architect whose work covered about four decades from 1901 in the Western District.
The Ballarat college has served the community and provided a sound education for boys continuously for many years in Ballarat.
