Location127 Sturt Street,, BALLARAT CENTRAL VIC 3350 - Property No B4744
File NumberB4744LevelState |
The former Unicorn Hotel, established on this site c1865, is of architectural ahd historical significance..
Architecturally, the building is a fine and substantial example of early Ballarat architecture. The unusual and elegant two-level verandah is the most distinctive feature. Despite the loss of some detailing, especially to the parapet, the verandah is important as the only two-level parapeted design known in Victoria, and for its slim and elegant iron work, reflecting its early date.
Historically, it is notable as a substantial hotel surviving from a relatively early date. It is also strongly associated with the "Corner", which was the name given to the street corner, where frenzied stock brokers and their clients spilled out of the Mining Exchange next door onto the street in the mid nineteenth century.
