Statement of Significance

The Rushworth Chronicle Steam Printing Office is significant at a State level as a rare example of a once common industrial establishment. Built in 1888 to house the new steam powered presses, this intact simple double brick office and dwelling was built to a Cornish design popular on the Burra copper fields. The relatively intact interior together with the unusual cooling design through the ventilated hollow brick piers, the water pipes under the floor, the overhead belting system and collection of printing equipment related to this small town printery all combine to make this building notable.
Historically the building is important as the site from which the Rushworth Chronicle was published for a small town newspaper. The building gains significance from the collection of bound back issues still held on site in the original shelving.
