AHC Statement of Significance
The former Echuca Police Station, now the Historical Museum, was erected in 1867 by the Public Works Department. The single storey brick structure then comprised an asymmetrical double fronted building with a projection gable and a timber verandah. Additions were made in 1876 which transformed the building into a symmetrical structure with projecting gables at each end and a central recessed verandah. Drawings for both sections were executed by M A Williams.
This is a notable example of the several police stations erected thorughout Victoria in the nineteenth century. The resultant symmetrical form of the building and the local bricks are notable featues. The simple detailing and lack of ornament reflect the building's utilitarian fuction and well demonstrates this period in the development of the Public Works Department. It is an essential feature of the Echuca riverport precinct and a fine element of this important historic city. The building is intact and in good condition. It is now used as a historical museum.
