George Hotel, 25 Lydiard Street North, Ballarat, has existed on this site since 1853, although the present building was constructed in 1902 to designs by E and B Smith. The principal feature of the three storey building is the triple storied, six bay, cast iron verandah. The main facade was originally face brickwork. The first floor facade is characterised by archivolts to the row of windows. The balustraded parapet has a semi-circular tympanum. Classified: 02/07/1974
It is of prime importance for its three-storied verandah and for its role in the Lydiard Street North streetscape.
The site of the hotel also has considerable historical associations. The three storey cast iron verandah is believed to be unique in Victoria and is largely intact. The building, but especially the verandah, has an important complementary streetscape role with the buildings opposite.
The building itself is a very late example of its type, in the Classical Revival style.
The hotel has had the brackets of the verandah and the parapet urns removed and the face brickwork has been painted.
