Designed by H R Bastow and erected in 1877, this brick school with a verandah on all sides is believed to be the first school to incorporate the Tobin tube ventilation system, named after its inventor. An extra classroom with verandah all round was added in 1881 and apart from some minor alterations carried out in 1916 along with the enlarging of some windows, the plan is unchanged. The building is notable for its picturesque setting looking down the Ovens valley, and also for being the only school known to be built with this plan.
