Statement of Significance

J B Denny erected a four-room cottage on the site in 1862. Denny was the architect of the building and at that time was also superintending architect at St Patrick's Cathedral. He is recorded as occupier of an enlarged house on this site until it was sold. It appears that at that time alterations were made to the building and its present appearance basically dates from that period.
The house is situated at the corner of King William Street. A two tier arcade runs along the Nicholson Street facade and partially along the King William Street frontage.
This is a notable example of boom style house design. The composition is unusual but consistent within the philosophy of terrace architecture. The early association with J B Denny is interesting and it appears that the rear portion of the building dates from Denny's time. The two tier arcade forms a distinctive feature of the house and its elaborate decoration epitomizes the boom style. The house is prominently situated and is an essential element of the Nicholson Streetscape.
