Statement of Significance

Shortly after Tom Roberts, the eminent and influential artist, arrived back in Australia from London, he purchased a block of land and builtthis house which he named Talisman, with a separate studio close by in the garden. He lived there from 1923 until he died in 1931.
The single-storey weatherboard house has had some small alterations but still evokes much of the 20's and 30's. Near the house is the weatherboard studio, in which he completed his well known painting
"Bailed Up". The studio, which has a large high level window to improve the natural lighting, is included .
