Statement of Significance

Lilydale Shire Offices and Council Chamber of 1889 in rendered brickwork of neo-classical detail with a rusticated ground floor and on the upper floor elaborate pilasters and window pediments surrounded by a central arched feature. (The later single-storey additions are excluded) Lilydale Shire Offices, Athenaeum, Mechanics Institute, and Free Library. Group Classification: Included with the Lilydale Shire Offices the facade of the adjacent Athenaeum, Mechanics Institute and Free Library, a single-storey facade with sympathetic neo-classic detail including pilasters, pairs of engaged columns supporting a pediment above and arched entrance door and a balustraded cornice.
