Statement of Significance

Built in 1874 to the design of the notable architectural firm, Crouch and Wilson, and extended in 1908 and 1924, the Hawksburn Primary School is of State significance;
As one of thirteen prize winners in a Victoria-wide competition to design model schools for the recently constituted Education Department, it has important associations with the evolution of the Coloney's education and the history of its school architecture;
A fine and early example of the prevailing style of public architecture in Australia and Britain, with the display of the picturesque towered external form, craftsmanship and the richly coloured materials, associated with the style;
As a good example of the work of the prolific and notable architectural firm of Crouch and Wilson and the high design standards employed in Victorian public architecture of that era;
It has Regional significance as a major long-term public building in the Prahran area which has embodied the social history of education in the area and provided a major architectural contribution over time, as one of Prahran's larger public buildings.
