Statement of Significance

Completed in 1881 for Melbourne businessman George Williamson Bruce (1841-1908), this large single-storey Italianate villa is of local historical significance as one of only two remaining nineteenth century villa structures in Queens Road, and for its association with the prominent Bruce family. It is of architectural significance as a representative example of one of the types required by covenant in that area under the conditions of the subdivision of Albert Park grounds and as a typical example of the group of large nineteenth century villas that were built for Melbourne' s wealthy upper middle class in the St Kilda/Queens Road area.
