Statement of Significance

A very important building, substantially intact, complimenting the design of South Melbourne station, situated on the same line. It is a good example of the principles of the Italianate School, as they were applied to railway buildings during the boom period. Itincludes such devices as romanesque arches, bracketed eaves, cornices, pediments and corinthian capitals to the verandah columns.
Cast iron is employed lavishly and the fan light over the booking hall entrance is of special interest.
Internally the timber panelled ceiling to the booking hall, its tiled floor, panelled dados and blind arched recesses echoing the forms of the booking window opposite are of interest. Though less impressive, the booking hall is more intact than the similar example at South Melbourne.
