Statement of Significance

Biltmore, built in 1923 (architect unknown) is of architectural and historical significance at the State level.
Biltmore is of architectural significance as a generally Arts & Crafts design with unusual oriental influences. The composition of the front of the block is particularly skilful, combining contrasts of solid and void with bold verticality to produce one of the most architecturally notable early apartment blocks in Melbourne. Important individual features include the entrance with its archway and pergola; the flat central panel of the facade with its central ocular window and attached quasi-Egyptian decoration, the rendered balustrades flanked by tall columns of brickwork, and the decorative corner elements projecting above the roof. The arched entrance, and particularly the profiled timbers of the pergola lend an oriental, somewhat Japanese character to the building.
Biltmore is historically significant as a substantially intact example of an early apartment block located in St Kilda, a suburb associated with a high density of flat development since World War 1. Biltmore retains significant original features including staircase, fireplaces, pantry cupboards, letterboxes, and milk and bread hatches.
