The building is a very important streetscape element to Bay Street; located on the corner of Raglan/Crockford and Bay Streets it terminates the vista north along Bay Street and provides a sense of enclosure to the shopping centre. It provides an excellent example of a restrained hotel building of the early 1860's and the design, occupying a splayed corner site is unique in Victoria and of considerable importance.
A remarkably intact hotel building of the 1860's with a well-proportioned austere facade. The ground floor bar windows, with arcuated heads survive intact and create a pleasing repetition of element. The building was originally polychrome brick-brown brick with yellow brick detailing, but the bricks have subsequently been rendered over and painted. The design of the building is simple with large arch headed bar windows divided by central mullions. Internally, little of note survives.
The building survives remarkably intact with the original slate roof and is in good condition.
