Statement of Significance

Cloyne, built in 1887 for Sir John and Lady Madden, is historically and architecturally significant at a State level.

Cloyne is historically significant for its associations with Sir John Madden, eminent citizen and the Chief Justice of Victoria, and Lady Madden where they lived until 1912.

The building is architecturally significant as a large two storied 30 roomed stuccoed brick Italian Revival mansion with intact rooms. It is further distinguished by its use of asymmetry in the two major facades that formed the side entrance and garden fronts. The large addition between Cloyne and Chapel Street is not part of the classification.
