Statement of Significance

The former Missions to Seamen building at Port Melbourne is an important work of Harry A Norris, one of Melbourne's early designers in the Moderne style, and one of the examples in Melbourne derived from the European Modern movement, particularly from the work of W M Dudok. The building, constructed in 1937 as a gift from Alfred Nicholas to the Church of England, has a cruciform floor plan which contains a chapel, a large hall, other recreation rooms, sleeping accommodation on the first floor and a sundeck and living quarters for the chaplain and the caretaker. The building is near intact and among the few seamen's missions extant in Victoria.
