Statement of Significance

The 1859 abutments are a fine example of design after the style of I.K. Brunel, and of stonemansons' skill. The design solution to a huge engineering challenge in the 1850s is worthy of noting. The existing rivetted steel truss is a fine example of the technology of the period.
