Statement of Significance

Lodge & Gates at Rupertswood, Macedon Street, Sunbury, comprise the elaborate gates and adjacent lodge erected with the main house in 1874 for Sir William Clarke, to the designs of architect George Brown. The lodge is asymmetrically composed and is constructed in stone relieved by lighter dressings, a motif repeated to the iron palisade fence. Part single, part double storied, the lodge is characterised by its gabled roofs.

Lodge and Gates at Rupertswood , Macedon Street, Sunbury, form part of the important nineteenth century mansion Rupertswood. The gates and lodge are probably the most elaborate of any private house in the State and are most important architecturally. Both are a landmark in Sunbury and have an important landscape role in the surrounding area. Stylistically the lodge is a notable example of Italianate Conservative Classical design. The iron work is most notable.

Lodge and Gates at Rupertswood, Macedon Street, Sunbury, have been somewhat neglected in recent years, but are very largely intact and in fair condition.
