Statement of Significance

A supreme example of the work of Walter Burley Griffin. The facetted stonework is a mature example of his individual use of stone. The stonework also illustrates the modern expression this architect developed in working this traditional material. Special reference is made to the handling of light in the design of the rotunda (Refectory). The importance of the building is enhanced by its place in the history of tertiary education in Victoria and by the development of Catholic lay culture in Melbourne.
