The former house, Goodrest, now the conference centre Simonds Hall at 120 Toorak Road, was erected in 1885 for W P Buckhurst, a notable builder and developer, particularly in the South Melbourne area. The architect was Walter Buckhurst, the owner's son. The two storey brick mansion has the typical Italianate massing with projecting canted bay wing, tower and two storey cast iron verandah. The tower is capped by a mansard dome. The facade is elaborately decorated. Classified: 09/12/1971
Goodrest is one of the few grand mansions surviving in this area and is notable for its association with the Buckhurst family. It is a fine example of the boom style Italianate mansion. The typical composition is enhanced by elaborate decoration and the mansard dome on the tower. The stylized first floor cornice and window mouldings and the ground floor verandah with coupled columns and balustraded plinth are notable features. The house is an outstanding feature of the South Yarra and Fawkner Park precincts. The building has been recently restored. The garden, once neatly separated into paths and flowerbeds, is now a carpark. Of state significance.
