Alnwick was built for (later Sir) James Patterson at the height of his political career, in 1892-3. Patterson was Premier of Victoria from January 1893 to August 1894, and lived in the house until his death in October 1895. Although the design is conservative in form, the detailing, including the distinctive strapped, banded and corbelled chimneys, half-timbered flying gables and long narrow windows with multi-paned upper sashes, is characteristic of the so-called Melbourne Queen Anne style, which was not widely employed before the turn of the century.
