'J' Block at the Victoria Barracks was erected in 1860 to serve as the barracks hospital. This two storey regular coursed basalt structure, with restrained fine axed stone mouldings, was designed by P W D architect, Gustav Joachimi, in a style based upon colonial Georgian architectural traditions and generally adopted for military barracks in the mid 19th century. The composite timber and iron verandah was erected after 1878.
The Barracks Hospital, 'J' Block is an integral part of an important military complex which was established in 1859 to accommodate the 40th Regiment of the Imperial garrison in Victoria.
This bluestone structure of 1860 - with later composite timber and iron verandah and notable palladian bar balustrades, is characteristic of military barracks architecture of the mid-nineteenth century in Australia.
'J' Block at Victoria Barracks is being restored to near original condition and converted for use as office accommodation. Classified: 29/10/1970
