Statement of Significance

The William Stanford fountain in Gordon Reserve is significant at the State level. This whimsical, well-balanced work, set in a triangle of lawn and five large plam trees is the only available art work of the artist. (The only other known works are monumental stones in St Kilda cemetery). Carved from Victorian basalt, the fountain is a gentle contrast to the solid government and public buildings around.
