Small & Shattell is significant as an example of an early Melbourne firm specalizing in the production of a branch of machinery which has been maintained over almost 100 years. It is possibly that some of their machine tools may be of interest. The extent of distribution of their products is uncertain at this stage, but they are likely to be quite widespread. The listing status may need to be upgraded after some further research on W G Goetz and Sons, which was probably the first firm in Melbourne to produce biscuit making machinery, to determine how far they reflect this early function and have retained the specialisation.
