Location100-118 Paterson Street, CARLTON NORTH VIC 3054 - Property No B3422
File NumberB3422LevelState |
The row of ten terrace houses were erected on a speculative basis by Jurtus Wombach. The Wombach family still own the premises. Nos.102-118 were constructed gradually from 1889-1894. It appears No. 100 was added in 1911. The single storey brick terrace has a gallery on the street facade with a cast iron frieze. The cornice and parapet are rendered and each house is expressed by a pedimated name plate.
This is a notable example of boom style terrace architecture. The unusually long row is composed of ten repetitive units with some variation in the parapets. The polychrome brickwork on the ground floor, the rendered cornice and parapet and the cast iron gallery comprise a typical boom composition. The terrace is an essential part of the North Carlton precinct and a typical example of a building type which is a distinctive feature of inner suburban Melbourne.
The cast iron pallisade railing between the front gallery and the footpath is an original feature of the terrace. The rendered surfaces of one of the end terraces have unfortunately been painted.
