In August 1850, James Heffernan purchased the land at the corner of King and Latrobe Streets and it appears that he erected the present shop and dwelling soon afterwards. The two storey brick structure then comprised four rooms plus outbuildings, the upper floor of the rear wing was added c. 1880. The building has a simple gabled form with rendered street facades. The original verandah to the King Street facade has been removed. This building is one of the few structures surviving almost completely intact from the early years of the colony and with 556-8 Lonsdale Street is perhaps the oldest of its type in the CBD. Its detailing and composition express a very simple style indicative of its period. The crude mouldings and pict uresque composition of simple openings are distinctive features. The building still serves as a shop and dwelling and is prominently located.
