Statement of Significance

The large single-storey Italianate brick house with Victorian garden, now known as Monserrat, was constructed in 1888 to the design of its owner-archtitect George Jobbins. Monserrat is of State significance due to its association with Jobbins, a prolific architect for the Colonial Bank and designer of the first all wrought-iron framed building in Victoria. The property has historical associations with the Parer family and with the early Spanish emigrant families in the Surrey Hills area. The garden contains a number of nineteenth century plantings including a century-old peppercorn tree and a rare Spanish Cork Oak. Recent alterations have not detracted from the significance of the building.
