Statement of Significance

The townhouse was erected in 1853-54 by Thomas N Wilson, a produce and grain merchant. Alterations and additions were made in 1859 and 1962. Wilson occupied the premises until the 1890's. He sold it in 1907 to Henry McDonough, another produce and grain merchant, whose family owned the house until 1966. The two storey bluestone facade has a single storey verandah.
This is one of the oldest houses in East Melbourne and interesting for its long association with Thomas N Wilson and his family. The typical five bay composition is a fine example of conservative classical domestic architecture. The timber verandah with coupled columns is particularly notable. The house is an essential part of the East Melbourne area and a fine example of a building type which is a distinctive feature of inner suburban Melbourne.
The corrugated iron verandah roof has been replaced by ribbed metal decking, a less compatible material. The iron palisade fence and stone wall are compatible with the house.
