Two-storey mansion of c.1873 in rendered brickwork of asymmetrical plan on corner site with entrance at side, projecting corner bay, arcaded verandah around two facades and iron railing on bluestone base.

The houses on the east side of Powlett Street from the Gipps Street corner northward to 138 Powlett Street and southward to the corner of Hotham Street, also the group on the west side from Gipps Street to 138 Powlett Street and including 128-132 Gipps Street, form a group on 19th century houses, some of great indivivual distinction, which complement and support each other to form a homegeneous streetscape, which would suffer by the removal or drastic alterations of any particular one and of which Crathre House is the most dominant.
