Statement of Significance

The two storey brick building is of State cultural significance because it is currently occupied by La Mama Theatre, widely known as La Mama. It was built in 1883 for Anthony Reuben Ford, a Carlton printer. For more than thirty years, it has housed the La Mama experimental theatre, with administration facilities and dressing rooms on the upper floor. The now-famous old building stands as a striking and important landmark that, through its very significant latter-day associations with experimental theatre, has come to symbolise the cosmopolitan character of Carlton society. That latter-day cultural significance has been recognised far beyond Carlton's boundaries.
