8 Boston Road, Balwyn, is a two storey brick dwelling built, it is believed, for Jabez W Small in 1888. Constructed on a bluestone plinth, the house has a slate roof with paired eaves brackets and prominent chimneys. Asymmetrically arranged, the main facade has a single storey verandah supported on cast iron columns and a projecting gabled wing with a single storey bay window, round-headed windows and a roundel decorating the gable. The house isrepresentative of its period of construction and is of local importance in the context of the surrounding area. Conventional in planning and form, the house exhibits in its detailing both typical and distinctive eclectically derived elements. The roundel decorating the gable and the Tudor-style chimney stacks, with coupled octagonal flues, are distinctive details. The bluestone verandah column bases, triple round-headed window motif and the balconettes are of interest. It has been painted white and externally the verandah was probably originally two-storey, a finial appears to be missing. The balcony above the bay window is probably later and various other alterations have been made.
