Statement of Significance

Chevy Chase, 203 Were Street, Brighton, originally called Bona Park, was built as one of a pair of neighbouring houses for publisher Andrew Thompson in 1881. The adjoining house, Ratho, belonged to Thompson's partner John Niven. Chevy Chase is a two storied, stuccoed house, with twin symmetrically placed, full-height bay windows. An enriching cast iron verandah and tower are features.
Chevy Chase is a rare if not unique example of both a house and surrounding garden (originally 10 acres) exactly matching its neighbour. The neighbouring Ratho is now sadly defaced. Both the design, in an early Boom Style and the planning of the house are representative of the mansions of the period. The location of the tower behind the main facade is unusual.
Chevy Chase is in excellent condition and reasonably intact.
