Ibwiri, one of three identical speculative villas on adjacent sites built in 1887-88 for merchant William Kerr Thomson and designed by Lloyd Tayler, is of architectural and historical significance at a state level.
Ibwiri is a substantially intact villa of unusually elaborate design, incorporating several distinctive elements. The bichromatic brickwork is finely detailed, the timber posted verandah includes a decorative valance, and the roof features plain and fish-scale slates, with a decorated ridge. These are characteristic of Lloyd Tayler's domestic work. There is an octagonal lantern over a central octagonal hall which has a timber lined ceiling and encaustic tiled floor which continues down the entry corridor and verandah floor. Most skirtings, cornices and fireplaces are also intact. The building is of historical significance for its association with William Kerr Thomson, one of Brighton's wealthiest and most influential men.
