Finchal is a building of unknown date(s) and origin. Metal roof pans at the rear suggest part at least dated from the 1850s. A long, low, stuccoed wing, with doors dispersed along the timber and iron verandah faces the street. The projecting room is a later addition to possibly the 1880s. Various wings extend to the rear, some slate, some metal roofed.
Finchal is of consequence as the birthplace (in 1882) of Percy Aldridge Grainger, celebrated pianist and nationally important composer. The building itself, or portions of it, may date from the 1850s or earlier, rendering it an early surviving building in the Brighton area. The structure has considerable streetscape value and is an example of the colonial style with a Classical Revival projecting wing. Finchal has been variously altered and extended, but is reasonably intact and varies from fair to good condition.
