Church Statement: Organ Statement: The pipe organ built in 1875 is the only largely intact example of an organ built by the Melbourne organbuilder Robert Mackenzie that can currently be identified and whose provenance is known. How is it significant? The organ is significant for historic, aesthetic and technical reasons at a regional level. Why is it significant? The Mackenzie pipe organ at St George's Church is significant for the following reasons: . It is the only identifiable example of its builder's work that remains essentially intact and has a known provenance . Only two other organs survive in largely original state that may be considered to have been built by Mackenzie . Most of his instruments (few in number) have been rebuilt, altered or destroyed . It is a single-manual instrument with a distinctive case, with elements of the work of the London organbuilders Hill & Son providing some inspiration . An architecturally remarkable, if not wholly felicitous church-cum-hall built in 1925-6 to the design of Louis Williams. It is distinguished externally by the jerkin-head gable projecting over the bell and by the rectilinear fenestration below. Internally the hammer-beam trusses and exposed brickwork evoke the English Arts & Crafts while the extraordinary form of the pew-ends gives them the appearance of teetering over backwards.
