Erected in 1929-30 to the design of Public Works Department architect Evan Smith , the Ernest Jones Hall and Chapel is of state significance as a fine exemple of the Spanish Mission style, and an essentially intact example of its application to a combined hall and chapel. The Hall and Chapel is significant in terms of the design for psychiatric hospitals as one of the few known examples of a recreational building detached from ward accommodation. The Hall and Chapel is an impotant element of a substantially intact Edwardian and inter-war psychiatric hospital complex, and a fitting memorial to Dr. W Ernest Jones, Inspector-General of the Insane between 1905 and 1937, and a prominent figure in mental health reform. The site of the Hall & Chapel has been assoicated with recreational uses at Mont Park since 1916.
