Statement of Significance

ELTHAM STUDY STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE:

Examples of this standard design late Victorian and Edwardian timber dwelling are very rare anywhere in the Shire, due to the district's lack of affluence and relative remoteness right up until the mid 20th century. Presumably this house was built to serve a farm or orchard and its siting in the Water Gully Creek valley reflects the late 19th and early 20th century pattern of settlement for agriculture along the fertile valleys of the Diamond Creek and its tributaries.

REVISED STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE (with AHC-criteria)

Mills farm house is significant to Wattle Glen:

- as an example of a late Victorian era timber farm house, in a typical Melbourne suburban style, but rare within the locality (Criterion B2);

- for its historical links with the Mills family and early gold diggings which are nearby in Watery Gully (Criterion A4);

- for its expression of farming and orcharding in the district, its siting in the Watery Gully Creek valley reflecting the late 19th and early 20th century pattern of settlement for agriculture along the fertile valleys of the Diamond Creek and its tributaries (Criterion A4).
